Our impact

Our campaigning has influenced policy discussions and shaped previous proposals within the private rented sector. Here are some of our key achievements so far:

• Engaged with ministers and officials at the highest level in the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG\), and provided evidence at government-led roundtables and Select Committee sessions.

• Quoted in numerous Select Committee hearings and Westminster debates, as well as cited in several House of Commons Research briefing papers. 

• Garnered wide-ranging support from the student housing sector in highlighting the likely impact of reforms on the student housing market.

• Led the debate on rental reform, publishing our own White Paper ‘A New Deal for the Private Rented Sector’, which resulted in the Government recognising the need for court reform. 

About our campaigns

The NRLA is campaigning to ensure the Government’s plans for the PRS are fair and workable for both tenants and landlords. We have identified several areas where changes are needed to make reforms effective for everyone. We are calling for:

• Balanced measures for the Renters' Rights Bill that ensure the Bill’s practicality and maintain landlords' confidence. 
• A realistic and achievable timetable for the updated energy efficiency standards, with guidance on what the new standards entail as soon as possible. 
• Unfreezing and realigning Local Housing Allowance rates to at least the 30th percentile to ensure they reflect local market rents.

Writing directly to your MP as a constituent is a powerful and effective lobbying tool. Your MP has an obligation to read what you send them and reply to all reasonable requests, so letting them know what you think is worthwhile.
